Sicily: A Great Day in Balestrate

Not only did we get up early (8am), but we actually got out of the house and into town by 9:45. What a difference! We found Enzo, the fishmonger; the greengrocer with family in Toronto; and Salvatore and Sheila, an Italian American couple who live here in Balestrate. It was still only 11:30am so we went for a walk on the beach and a swim in la mare. Que Bella!

We'd noticed honey bees in and around all the flowers and flowering trees and I'd wondered who had hives. Walking back from the beach, I stopped at the old train station and heard that familiar humming noise. The bees have made the old train station their home - cool in the summer, warm in winter and always dry.

Later as we were enjoying a belated lunch on our second floor terrace overlooking the ocean and valley, a swarm of bees zoomed by. Neither of us has ever seen a swarm, both of us have read about them. It was very cool and very scary at the same time. We were very happy the swarm quickly passed us by.

After an awesome nap, we got up in time to catch the sun set from the seaside bar we found yesterday. A glass of prosecco at the sunset. The barmaid gave us a post card depicting the small cove in the summer. It is a disco with a capacity of 1,000. What I can't figure out is where they all take a piss!
