More Traditional Food: Dulse

Dulse is a lovely sea vegetable - seaweed. Locally harvested our neighbour’s dulse is the best I’ve ever tasted. Freshness is definitely key to the gentle sea flavour and chewy texture.

It’s a purple black colour in bright light and tastes like the sea…

Special Visitor

Our huge hearted friends Betty and Linda offered their now adopted favorite foster kitten to come to our house for a visit.

Needless to say... Sarah is quickly taking full advantage.

Construction This Week

The Carpenters are nearly finished trimming out all the windows and baseboards in the front entry. All the exterior trim on the new windows is in place and sealed. Our fantastic painter Chris has rehung a couple of the kitchen doors and continues to pick away at the trim throughout the main floor as well as stripping all the hinges and hardware of 130 yrs of paint.

Our cabinet maker came by to measure up for the suite. progress!

Bohaker Construction This Week

After finally receiving the invoice for the lifting of the barn and it's restabilization... the realization has come that we need to prioritize what will get done and what will remain undone in this restoration/ renovation. We have taken a good look at the remaining finances, the commitments we have made to certain trades and our own priorities.

This means the things that were started need to be finished and then we plan to focus on Sarah's kitchen renovation in the spring.

The new birch threshold for the front door is in and the two new East facing windows are trimmed. Our painter
Chris is slowly but surely working on rehabilitation of the doors.

The First Week In Review

The first Weekend of January was slow on the construction front. Fortunately things were still a little busy... our painter Chris Pateman worked on stripping our beautiful hinges and began rehabilitation of our doors and trim.
- Sarah is pictured readying herself for chin ups at the Bridgetown gym... and enjoying trying on her new longjohns...
- The return of the Annapolis Royal Winter Farmer's Market was greatly appreciated... and Sarah made a wonderful local meal...

The Hinge

TaDa! The hinges in our house are stunning.

Right!

Chickens!

I love that our local butcher has its own little flock of chickens. They scratch around in the door yard and lay eggs in the hay bales.

A Quiet Week at Our NS House

Ending with the return of our local Annapolis Royal Winter Farmer's Market... this first week of January was a quiet one for Construction. Our haul from the first winter market of 2023! And a first fresh local veggie cooked meal…

Traditional foods: Solomon Gundy

As a child I remember having Solomon Gundy occasionally. Over the past few months here in Nova Scotia we have found a fish guy whose product we really enjoy. When we were there on New Year’s Eve he was kind enough to gift us with an in Normas jar of his Solomon Gundy. What is it you ask? Pickled herring. And very tasty.  Certainly not beloved by all but as the ad goes: ‘those who like it, like it a lot’.
