Second Weaving

For a long time I would say things like after the apocalypse/singularity my family will be warm. And here we are! I do hope there is a paradigm shift that allows people to value things differently. The simple pleasures of time with friends, and for me, the creation of useful beautiful, whole, sustainable material objects.

This is the second thing I’ve woven during the pandemic. It began as a white ‘kindly wooded’ Shetland fleece that I bought at Jamieson’s wool brokers in Lerwick Shetland when I was there for Wool Week in 2018 with my wool girlfriends Char and Maria. This is part of the wool brokers stash that I reveled in.

After getting home I began hand carding and spinning the fleece. I won awards a at
Last year’s Haines State Fair for the yarn. Then my plan was to knit something, but I changed my mind after I had my first success weaving on the Guild’s Schact rigid heddle loom. It took me about a month on and off to weave this lovely scarf/shawl.

The warping and work in progress.

Tiring the fringe.

It’s finished!

Little Miss Fix-It

A couple years ago I got this chair free at a yard sale. I like it because it’s made out of organic materials Cotton and wood and metal. And that means your butt doesn’t sweat when you sit on it unlike the plastic camp chairs. Unfortunately, I hadn’t paid attention to how much the canvas seat had stretched out and last weekend the chair broke. On Monday night Chris and I went off to the Canadian tire and bought the washers and Locknuts for the metal bracket fix, and then last night, after I finished the gardening, I sewed a new seat and put it on. Snazzy!

It’s going camping again this weekend.

Kombucha Explosion

I feel like I dogged a bullet tonight. One of our brewing kombucha developed so much pressure that the beer bottle it was in exploded. Exploded with such violence that pieces of glass embedded in the tea towel on our stove and scarred the tile back splash. I was sitting with my back to it and miraculously suffered no damage at all - except to my psyche. Chris thought I was messing around with one of his guns and it had accidentally discharged, so he too is feeling a little delicate. It took us almost two hours to clean up enough to feel like we got the worst of it. The explosion also shattered the two brewing kombucha bottles beside the bomb. You can imagine the mess.

A small part of the mess. Chris is adamant that there shall be no more kombucha.
