Italian Spices

We were so happy today to receive a package of pre-mixed spices and pomodorini pesci from our favourite spice stand in Roma...

The smell was amazing and took us back to Roma and Palermo,  Sicilia

Sarah teared up...

Gardening

I am very proud of us, we got a whole bunch of gardening done in the last week. The weather has been inclement, but we’ve tried not to let that deter us.

We even managed to get most of the compost into bins- we went up and down our road filling all the neighbours bus just before the truck came this afternoon to pick up the compost. We feel like Rock Stars!

Rambling

I like the word rambling to describe something more than a walk but less than a hike. Each work day I take a brain break and go for a walk. Normally I walk around the millennium trail, but in the last week or so that trail has become far too popular mailing the city take action to ensure social distance. I figured I could be one less person using the trail if I could find another spot that had melted enough. Happily Chris was in as well so I had company. It was great - we drove to the end of Chadburn Lake road and found the lake trail was clear.

Selfie!

The weather was kinda grim and grey with a few snow flakes, but it was great to be out on the trails in the beautiful Yukon.

You can’t see the mountains very well in this photo, but they are there and quite spectacular.

Fresh Spun

Spending lots of time at home and admittedly far too much time watching TV does lead to lots of yarn getting spun. I have no fear of running out of wool any time soon, although Chris did have to talk me down a few times when I got anxious about my supply. Anyway, I began spinning up this Romney from the deep stash. It waited because it is a strong wool and I couldn’t decide what to do with it. In the end I just really liked the bright green colour and chose it for that.

I was thinking socks or mitts because I am wearing out my lovely mitts too fast. I suspect it is too itchy even for me.

Cropbox Salad

A local company that I think of a a tech start up has been using a sea can to grow fresh veg hydroponically year round here in Whitehorse. We’ve been subscribing for more than a year and enjoy the fresh salad every week. During this COVID-19 thing they even deliver.

Japanese Fish shaver: Katsuoboshi

We got a piece of the smoked dried bonito when we were in Japan and then found even a very sharp knife couldn’t shave it as is necessary for it to be used. So we bought a katsuobishi off Amazon. It works like a dream.

COVID 19 Sore Ear Straps

My sister, a nurse, asked me to make some straps to keep the loops of her face mask off her very sore ears. I’m sure many of you have heard of this and it is a simple thing to help our front line in this virus fight. I used what I had on hand. I’ve got lots of buttons and found ribbon and elastic so I can keep making them for a while. You hook the mask around the buttons instead of your ears.

Swans are Back!

Yesterday on my lunch walk I was thrilled to hear and then see a couple flights of swans. A welcome sound and sight after a very long winter.

Willow Basket

I started a willow basket with the prunings of our willow fence. It isn’t really working out but it was still a satisfying hour spent in the garden.

Pruning

We hit the willow dog fence and got most of it pruned And re-woven. It looks good.

I’ve taken the cuttings to make a willow basket.

Garlic Ground

We bought a lot of garlic last fall and didn’t get it all used up. Chris had an awesome epiphany (quite apros pos seeing as it is Easter) why not make it garlic powder?

Suffering Through...

Just had to do a shout out to our farmers Scott and Jackie Dixon and my beautiful wife Sarah for being such a great cook.

Our friends and family know we are foodies and love good food.  Sarah continues to make significant efforts to cook keto style food for my dietary needs while still being able to enjoy GOOD food.

Out latest meal Sunday was so good... I just had to blog about it.  Little bits of great cheese from our local cheese store to start.  Mutton chops, spring onions, cabbage tops and potatoes dauphinois and roasted yams for Sarah (so hard to resist).

Turkey Dinner is Served

A full astonishing organic Yukon turkey dinner... soooo good.  We sure miss sharing it with our friends...
