Rome Travel: With Dog and Roma Taxis

So far our experience of travelling with Isla in Rome has been pretty good. She's allowed in the two nice big parks by our apartment and one park even has an off leash play area that is very popular with local dogs (and their owners of course). She goes in cafes, restaurants and pretty much any where, except museums.

We were very surprised last evening to discover how difficult it was to get a taxi that would take us with the dog. 3 cabs came and refused to take the dog - even after we'd specified that we needed a taxi that would take a dog. The first cab even wanted 6 Euros for just showing up even though we had ordered a taxi that would take a dog and he refused!  When Christopher told him NO... the Taxi driver told him to F...OFF in italian.  It is possible that CJA responded in kind.

Apparently they expected a purse dog that wouldn't have to actually put its paws down in the cab. We had to wait more than an hour and engage the assistance of both our hostess (Franca) and a kind stranger we met on the street.

Soooo... Roma Taxis SUCK!!!

Isla waiting patiently for her pack members to finish shopping...
When we returned from Franca's house she got us onto the bus, and we were lucky enough to get four seats facing each other and the dog just laid at our feet. In fact, she was so cute that she got a lot of attention and even some photos. So, yes, normal sized dogs like Isla are allowed on the Roman buses. We've not tried the metro or trams, but hope they are as welcoming to her, she's pretty cute after all. I think it really helps when we make her do tricks, who can resist a lab with her paws in the air begging? Not many people.
