Skagway Pass

Skagway was so busy on Tuesday we decided to try our luck in the pass. It was damp, and also busy, but still a nice spot to stop for lunch and some spinning.

Fjiord Express Back to Skagway

Back up the Lynn canal on the catamaran. We saw a squad of sea lions occupying a navigation bouy. The male was huge!

His female harem were quite happy to be squished into the little spot they found.

Fishers hauling in salmon were happy that the State appeals court overturned a lower court ruling allowing the opening.

And Elred Rock was standing staunch and glower in the awful rain.

Juneau State Museum Gut Garments

There was a special exhibit of garments made from intestines that I really enjoyed.

Waterproof and quiet when damp. Good hunting gear for warm weather.

That’s Chris in the background.

Juneau: State Museum Amazing Collection

The Alaska state museum has an amazing collection. So many precious objects in one place was awe inspiring.

Some of the pieces were new productions, others old.

The provenance on some pieces was absent.

Or descriptions too short. The above head dress is made with what look like Russian trade beads and dentalium shells.

This piece above seems like it was from the Aleutian Islands. And the diorama below as well.

Juneau: Oysters!

Deckhand Dave’s fish tacos and Alaska oysters. Delicious-definitely put it on your list for a visit to Juneau. It’s a collection of food carts on a lot downtown with some tents and heaters for the downpour days.

It was raining so hard you could wash your hair in the rain.

Juneau: Totems & Tonics

There were 5 cruise ships in dock. Around 12,000 passengers disgorged from them.

This Juneau distillery tasting room had lovely cocktails: Amalga on Franklin (I think) just opposite the Baranof hotel.

We bought their gin!

The Taku restaurant- the Taku River empties into Alaska waters.

Lots of new totems. No interpretation though.

Ready for fire in the rainforest- hydrants hide in the lush gardens.

This piece of nail art shows Alaska in great detail, Nova Scotia and Newfound are just sketches.

We literally stumbled on it.

The international date line features.

Juneau Alaska: Gardens and Meadows

Walking around in Juneau Alaska in the rain today… allowed us a wonderful opportunity to see wildflower, and Meadows all over the hillside and beautiful gardens, all around the upper portions of Juneau.

More fjord express fast ferry to Juneau

We saw harbour seals, Stellers I am sea lions, and a type of shy skittish porpoise. The porpoises are repeated to be one of the fastest, marine mammals, caulking in at a top speed of 30 kn. No photos of them I’m afraid.

A grey day in the Lynn Canal

Sea lions basking

That’s Eldred Rock lighthouse.

Bald eagles, and some more sea lions, hold out on a navigational buoy.

Dyea: wildflowers

The wild columbine had just finished with a few flowers and many seed heads left to see.

The flowers below are unknown to us, but lovely. They look like seed heads until you get up close.
