Southeast Alaska State Fair

Today was the second day of the fair and my favourite event - the art to wear. Only 8 entries, each lovely in its own way.

Jellyfish Squish she was called.

Queen of Hearts out of corrugate cardboard.

And the forest fairies wearing foliage and flowers foraged in their yard. I caught up with them after and got a nice photo.

Skunk cabbage comprises the largest element of their ensemble.

A Lovely Evening in the Garden

With the bug zappers on, I can relax and enjoy some of my hard work from the weekend.

It isn’t Cooke enough to need the fire, it’s just for atmosphere.

Delicious Lamb

We had a leg of lamb in the freezer that I got out and cooked for our Sunday dinner. So good!!!

No morsel left behind!

Fishing!

I just realized I didn’t share our fishing success from a couple weekends ago. Some friends took us out onto Teslin lake on ‘no telle bay’ where my friend caught a nice trout. Then into a marshy area of willows where I caught a jack fish aka northern pike. Chris is modelling.

Gardening

The advent of streaming services means you can watch programming from all over the world. I got sucked in to BBC via the Amazon prime scheme and discovered Gardeners World. We have become fans of the show and it’s host, Monty Don. Each week in the Friday night show there are ‘jobs for the weekend’. Our garden schedule here in Yukon is vastly different from England, but the idea is still an inspiration. With cooler weather the mosquitoes and black flies are at a controllable level - bug spray and mosquito coils keep them away enough to spend time in the garden. This evening we tackled weeding and mulching one of the front garden beds.
Not done, but every bit helps.

My Dog Begs For Spinach

We’ve been slightly overrun by our leafy greens. We’ve developed a lot of new recipes for leafy greens. And we have tried to give them to as many friends as possible. And we still haven’t made much of a dent.

Scapa is very happy to have the crunch stems.

Morning cuddles with the dog.

Book, breakfast and mimosa.

Salad anyone?

Great Galloping Gardens!

With the heat, rain and compost put garden vegetable beds are amazing. We have enough leafy greens for an army!

And the strawberries climbed out of the garden years ago, preferring the gravel around the garden.

Gardening Day

The weather has been beautiful in Yukon this summer. Sunny hot days and afternoon or evening thundershowers. Much like the summers when we first moved here... Today Sarah is tackling a couple of the veg gardens while Topher got the cabin ready for new guests to arrive, along with lawnmowers and cleaning the dog run.

Nova Scotia House Progress Update

WooHoo! There is some positive progress! Darrell has been able to make it a couple hours a week and move forward some of the drywall and plaster work in the suite upstairs.
Carl Cole (House Lifter has been back to drop the carriage house down onto the new concrete foundation. The building has also been backfilled and the church parking lot is beautifully finished. Next steps, rocks to keep the vehicles and plow back from our building, dig out the silt from inside the carriage house and replace with proper compacted crush gravel and insulation below the new concrete floor.
Our fabulous mason Ted Gillis is back and continues work on repairs to the brick portion of the foundation on the main house. The basement windows have now been replaced with modern windows with openers. A trench has been dug and water and electrical lines run out to the carriage house. Two of the worst corners have now been rebuilt and the mortar is being repointed.

Bentwood Boxes

Sarah and I took a course to make First Nation style Bentwoood Boxes at the Adaka Cultural Festival. Our teacher Joanne Williams was kind and generous with her knowledge and wants her students to learn and pass it on to others. We found her approach and teaching style very positive.
