One of the really cool things about living in the Annapolis Valley are all the farm markets. Some operate right through the winter time with local apples and other winter vegetables available but spring is when they really start to shine. I think it’s indicative of the kinds of folks who choose to live here that many of the farm markets in the springtime have vegetable starts and strawberry roots and to my joy, asparagus crowns! I said to Christopher when we were driving through the valley yesterday afternoon if the farm market we stopped at had asparagus crowns I was having some. Well, they did! I’ve always wanted an asparagus bed. I love asparagus and it’s an amazing perennial vegetable.
Of course, one of the things about perennial, vegetable beds, or any perennial bed, is there’s a lot of preparation before you can plant the plants.

We already had the raised bed, last year it had Dalias in it and this year we were considering using it as a nursery bed. But before we can plant the asparagus crowns, we need to do some prep work. We’re digging it over getting rid of the bindweed 🤯😱🤬 and then we’re going to prepare the soil for the asparagus with some extra sand and wood Ash to give it drainage and sweeten the soil. Make it less acid basically - pun intended!
