Our Magnolia
We have been so delighted by the amazing magnolia in Annapolis Royal, and so we got one! It has a lovely scent. The garden geeks out there might like to know it is magnolia loebneri ‘white rose’.

Gardening: Hornbeam Hedge
Christopher did a bunch of research and determined that one of the fastest growing trees for this area that would make a nice privacy hedge as a hornbeam. On the opening day of the local garden centre we found five good size horn beans, and bought them all. Today we planted them.
Driveway (again)
Because we had to get the sewer pipe re-done I meant we were getting the driveway redone and we collaborated with our neighbour to remove the old fencing which was some plastic lattice and she is re-creating her yard so she can put a little above ground swimming pool in for cooling in the summertime. Phew!
Scapa really enjoyed another day of fun with visitors.

Curtains!
After more than a year, we got the curtains up! Thrilling to kings let me tell you. Here’s the dining room. Pairs of curtains made with IKEA linen.
And here’s the parlour. Curtains from vintage French linen I got on Etsy. The bay window requires a custom metal rod fabricated by a local metal guy who has gone a lot of little projects for us.

Suite Progress
After more than a year of waiting - more progress! Before the cleaning it still looks good. For safety sake we replaced the narrow, too low guard rail with this:
The kitchen from the bedroom area. Note the three drawers on the bedroom side.
The kitchen from the other side. The skylight is fantastic. Gives a real sense of light and space.
And the bathroom. There’s a toilet! And a sink!
Can’t use the sink yet because the drain isn’t hooked up.
It feels like a plan is coming together!

Some furnishings
We’ve had our eyes open looking for a hall tree for some time. But it had to be the right tone of wood and the right dimensions and all the ones we’ve seen so far have been too big or too late or just didn’t fit and then Thursday Christopher saw this one on Facebook. It seems almost impossible to get a picture of it because it is dark, and the rest of the room is light.
The centre of the back has a beautiful lily carved on it. Last night after Christopher got home and I was done work, I used my secret special boiled linseed oil treatment on it to give it a little bit of a cleanup. Plus I got some white paint off it with nail polish remover, very satisfying.
Chris also brought home the antique bookcase we bought for the front entrance. We bought it two weeks ago when we went to pick up mum. There was a break in the weather so Chris drove up to Halifax and back.
It made it here all in one piece with a small injury to the legs as it was being loaded. My very handy husband has glued those back online and once they’ve set a little bit we will pop it on its legs then I’ll give it the super special boiled linseed oil treatment.
And last but not least these fantastic Victorian uranium glass oil lamps. They glow green under black light.

Lobster Roll & Port Royal Lighthouse
Community organization has come together to try and save the port royal Lighthouse. They’ve done a whole bunch of fundraisers in the last six months, including a firewood raffle, but I think they’re most successful so far is the lobster rolls supper.
